Did you know...the Gray Wolf, also known as the Timber Wolf, was once abundant over much of North America. However, as a result of habitat destruction and widespread hunting, it now inhabits a very limited portion of its former range.
Wolves are built for stamina, possessing features ideal for long-distance travel. They are capable of covering several miles trotting at about a pace of six miles per hour, and have been known to reach speeds approaching forty miles per hour during a chase.
In 2001 there were about 2,445 wolves in Minnesota. Minnesota was the only state in the lower 48 whose wolf population was not completely and deliberately exterminated by government control programs.
Wolves howl to maintain contact with other pack members and to advertise their presence in their territory. Contrary to legend, wolves do not howl at the moon.
